Bagài

2014

Then another kind of vertigo seizes me, that of the detail of the detail of the detail, and I am drawn into the infinitesimal, the infinitely small, just as I was previously lost in the infinitely vast.
Italo Calvino, Six Memos for the Next Millennium, 1988

In Mantuan dialect Bagài means “Thing. Activity. Brothel. Slang to define something of which you do not know or recollect the name” (from the dictionary Mantuan-Italian by Francesco Cherubini, 1827). This work deals with the process of modernization and adaptation of five historical buildings in Mantua. After getting lost in the infinitely vast of these buildings, the photographs depict the infinitesimal, inconspicuous things that make monuments accessible to the public.
